Intern Job Description
Note: This is an unpaid position
TITLE OF POSITION: EDUCATION RESEARCH ASSISTANT
SUPERVISED BY: Education Specialist
PURPOSE OF JOB: To assist the education staff in developing content for school age, college, family and adult learners. Includes audience development, promotional campaigns, mail list development, Internet research, and research in the archives of this and other National Archives and presidential libraries.
HOURS: 10 hours per week (minimum) for at least three months. Hours include at least one morning per week (9:00am - 11:30am). Several evenings per semester
EXPECTATION:
- Research of historical material for the preparation of teaching materials on a range of 20th-century themes: international human rights; domestic policies, the New South; the Great Depression; international diplomacy; the energy crisis; poverty eradication, etc.
- Learning about the Carter presidency and becoming proficient in the milestones of his administration. Ability to give guided tours of the museum to visitors when we are short staffed.
- Skills include: public speaking, strong oral communication, research, writing, image manipulation, documentation and preparation of material (text, images) for publication.
DUTIES:

Primary:
- Performing research with primary and secondary sources at the Jimmy Carter Library Archive, Atlanta university libraries, and on-line.
- Locating and scanning images, drafting copyright requests for material to feature in publication, in exhibition, and on our website.
- Writing of scripts, label copy, image or object descriptions

Secondary:
- Learning about the Carter presidency. Following regular tours by experienced staff and volunteers. Performing tours for student and adult audiences.
- Additional research/administrative duties as needed: helping with mailings, mail list maintenance, email correspondence, filing, copying.
SUPERVISION: Kahlil Chism - Education Specialist
COMPENSATION: College credit for students who qualify under their university internship guidelines. Admission to Jimmy Carter Library events, book signings, lectures, concerts, openings. No stipend or salary accompanies this internship.
QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED:
- Must be age 18 or older
- Reliable, responsible
- Punctual
- Able to accept supervision
- Academic research experience
- Detail oriented
- Good organizational skills
- Photography, illustration, design skills beneficial
- Ability to travel reliably to and from the Library on work days
TRAINING/ORIENTATION PROVIDED:
The majority of the work required involves independent research, reading and writing.
Supervision of these tasks, revision of written work, and direction of research themes will be given
by the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum staff.
